You might have seen our Unicorn Xtra Rainbow Boost post on April Fools Day, although sadly we haven’t launched a new product for unicorns, all the ingredients bar one (fairy dust!) were genuine naturally colourful ingredients from our range of equine supplements!
Lets talk through some of the health benefits associated with eating the rainbow (from an equine perspective!), in colour order:
Beetroot a powerful antioxidant, containing important bioflavonoids, to mop up harmful free radicals.
Turmeric is used to support general health and mobility. The active ingredient in turmeric is curcumin, which provides antioxidant as well as anti-inflammatory support. We add black pepper, for its active ingredient piperine, which helps to improve horse’s absorption of curcumin.
Dandelion, the common plant with a distinctive yellow flower, is rich in vitamins and minerals. Dandelion has significant antioxidant properties and is traditionally used to help support the liver and kidneys.
Spirulina from blue green algae, supports the immune system but is also an antioxidant and protein source, ideal for supporting muscle health and growth.
Copper is a key trace mineral, that plays a lot of important roles in the body including:
- red blood cell production, in particular haemoglobin production.
- a key component in antioxidant enzymes, helping to protect muscle and other cells from oxidative damage.
-as a key co-factory in enzymes which help maintain strength and flexibility in connective tissue such as tendons and ligaments.
-bone production and development, vital for skeletal development in young horses.
- the production of myelin the protective covering of nerve cells.
- keratin synthesis for healthy skin, hair and hoof production.
- a component in enzymes responsible for the production of skin pigments.
Grapeseed Extract is a potent antioxidant, which helps to mop up the harmful free radicals produced during exercise and stress, which would otherwise damage cells and result in a reduction in performance and a delay in recovery.
Blueberries are known for their superfood properties in the human world, this is because of they are another powerful antioxidant.
You may have noticed a theme, most of these colourful ingredients are antioxidants. What are antioxidants and free radicals? Antioxidants mop up the harmful free radicals preventing oxidative stress and damage to cells. Antioxidants are natural compounds that can be made in the body or found in the diet.
Free radicals are unstable molecules. Free radicals are naturally produced by the body during normal exercise, but excessive free radicals produced during intense exercise, illness and stress can cause oxidative damage to cells.
